A Typical Visit

Providing quality health care takes time. For a first visit, plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled visit and expect to spend at least 2 hours at the clinic. For follow-up visits, plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled visit and expect to spend at least an hour at the clinic.

When you arrive at the clinic please notify the receptionist. Some paper work will be necessary and you will need to show your Alberta Health card.

Make sure your child arrives at the clinic with a full bladder but not an over full or “bursting” bladder.  Within the 30 to 60 minutes before the appointment, ask your child to drink at least one ounce of water for each year of age. If your child has just eaten or finished gym at school, drink more. If your child has a problem with voiding frequently and daytime wetting, use your best judgment.  If your child needs to void immediately on arrival please let the receptionist know right away.

Before your child voids, an ultrasound will be performed to assess the bladder when full.  After this ultrasound your child will be requested to void into a special toilet that will measure the urine flow rate and other aspects of bladder function. Immediately after voiding a second ultrasound will be performed to assess the bladder when empty. A specimen of urine will be routinely tested for infection.

Dr. Robson will assess your child after the ultrasounds, uroflow procedure, and urine tests are complete. Dr. Robson will ask a lot of questions, carefully examine your child, and then offer advice on how to help with the problem. You will always be given enough time to ask questions and before you leave you will be provided with a personalized set of printed recommendations to take home and consider. Specialized tests are occasionally required and will be arranged by the receptionist. Further appointments are almost always necessary to check on the progress of your child.

A consultative note will be prepared for each visit. The doctor who referred your child, will receive this note by fax on the same day as the visit.
